Dr. Alberto Ortigao is a highly distinguished senior geotechnical consultant with over 50 years of global engineering experience. As a licensed Professional Engineer in the US and a Fellow and Chartered Engineer of the Institution of Civil Engineers in London, he brings a wealth of practical, real-world insight to his continuing education courses. His extensive career covers a wide array of complex geotechnical challenges, including the design and analysis of tailings and water dams, slopes, embankments, deep foundations, excavations, structures, and tunnels.
Bridging the gap between academic research and applied engineering, Dr. Ortigao holds a PhD from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, where he served as a faculty member for 25 years. Fluent in five languages, his expertise spans major consulting projects across the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia, alongside specialized offshore foundation design work in the UK. A globally recognized educator and former Visiting Professor in Canada, Hong Kong, and Australia, he is also a prolific thought leader who has published over 100 technical papers and two foundational engineering textbooks, including the Handbook of Slope Stabilisation.
