Designing Concrete Slabs for Heavy Load Conditions
This course provides the criteria and design principles for concrete slabs on grade that are subjected to heavy load conditions. It is applicable to engineers and design professionals involved in industrial and commercial structures where heavy loads—such as moving equipment, stationary live loads, and wall loads—must be accommodated safely and efficiently.
Participants will learn both the theoretical and practical aspects of designing concrete slabs for demanding load environments. The course covers design concepts, foundational considerations, and analytical methods for assessing slab behavior under heavy load scenarios. The instructional material is adapted from the U.S. Army and Air Force Technical Manual “Concrete Floor Slabs on Grade Subjected to Heavy Loads,” ensuring that the content is based on proven engineering standards and best practices.
Learning Objectives
This course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:
- Introduce the fundamentals of foundation design for heavy load concrete slabs
- Explain the basis of slab on grade design
- Determine floor slab requirements for various load and support conditions
- Conduct effective site investigations to support slab design
