Webinar: Killing Fire Before It Kills You

Scheduled: Wednesday, May 13, 2026, 11:00 am – 12:00 pm ET (10:00 pm CT / 9:00 pm MT / 8:00 pm PT)

Webinar calendar pdhAuthor: Paul Spite

In many ways, fire behaves as a living entity: it consumes, breathes, and propagates by using its own heat to spread. If left unchecked, it can destroy our possessions, resources, and threaten lives. This course examines the practical methodologies and design strategies used to effectively put an end to fire. Participants will explore how to extinguish a fire by removing any leg of the fire triangle: heat, oxygen, or fuel. By understanding how to freeze, choke, or starve a fire , designers can better utilize building codes that offer extensive guidance on depriving fire of the elements it needs to survive, especially fuel and oxygen.

Participants will learn to identify all four ingredients that make up the fire tetrahedron and differentiate between various types of fires based on their specific fuel sources. The presentation explains three basic methods to remove heat from a burning surface. Finally, attendees will explore the structural methods used for fire mitigation, including how to identify and describe the different types of barriers and partitions used to effectively separate fire areas within a building.

Target Audience:

This course is intended for all engineering disciplines, especially professionals who specify fire-resistant materials, design building safety systems, or develop emergency egress plans. It is highly relevant for architectural, mechanical, and structural engineers responsible for implementing fire barriers, suppression systems, and code-compliant partition assemblies.

Learning Objectives

This Live Webinar course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Identify the four essential ingredients that make up the fire tetrahedron.
  • Explain the three basic methods used to remove heat from a burning surface.
  • Describe the various types of barriers and partitions used to separate fire areas within a building.
  • Differentiate between the various classes of fires based on their specific fuel sources.

Note: This is a live webinar delivered via GoToMeeting. Login instructions will be emailed to you 24-48 hours prior to the webinar and the morning of the webinar. If you have not received your instructions for any reason, please call customer support the day of the event. Webinars are live and interactive, and students will have the ability to directly interact with and ask questions of the presenter.
