Understanding Wastewater Treatment Plant Operations

This course focuses on the operational principles of pre-manufactured wastewater treatment facilities, often called “package plants,” which are ideal for managing flows between 0.01 and 0.25 MGD. We will examine the operational mechanics of three common systems: extended aeration, sequencing batch reactor (SBR), and oxidation ditch plants. For each system, the course details its general configuration, typical applications, operational advantages and disadvantages, expected performance, and associated costs.

This course provides engineers with a practical understanding of how these common treatment systems function in small communities or on individual properties. It delivers key information on applicability, performance metrics, fundamental design criteria, and crucial operation and maintenance (O&M) protocols.
