Composite Steel and Concrete Diaphragm Seismic Design
This course provides a detailed overview of the seismic design of diaphragms composed of composite steel and concrete systems. The material emphasizes the integration of steel beams and steel deck with concrete fill to form composite diaphragms capable of resisting seismic forces. Engineers will gain insight into the design process, key performance parameters, and the structural role these diaphragms play in maintaining building integrity during seismic events.
The course material is based on the NEHRP Seismic Design Technical Brief No. 5 and introduces the principles of seismic design specific to composite steel and concrete diaphragms. Participants will learn about diaphragm components, their behavior under load, building-level analysis and design forces, and the internal component interactions critical to seismic performance. The course also covers detailing, constructability, and design strategies that ensure both safety and efficiency in structural systems.
Learning Objectives
This course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:
- Explain the role of diaphragms and diaphragm components in seismic design
- Analyze the behavior and design principles of composite steel and concrete diaphragms
- Calculate diaphragm forces and the resulting forces in internal components
