State Board Requirements

What is my board’s requirement for the number of PDH credits required for license renewal?

The number of PDH units required for license renewal varies by jurisdiction. For U.S. states that require continuing professional competency activities, it is typically between 12 to 15 hours if renewed annually or 24 to 30 hours if renewed biennially. For users in the U.S. you can check your state requirements on PDH-Pro.com.

What type of activity is accepted for PDH credit by the state engineering licensing boards?

State boards typically accept a PDH activity that meets the following criteria:

“A course or activity whose purpose and objective are clear with a content that will maintain, improve or expand the skills and knowledge of the licensee’s field of practice.”

Correspondence, distance learning and internet courses are accepted by all the states that require engineering continuing education activities provided that the course meets the above guidelines and provided that completion of the course can be independently verified. The state boards consider completion of the course to be independently verified if you must take and pass a quiz to successfully complete the course, the quiz is graded and the results are kept on file by the course provider for a prescribed length of time (the number of years varies for each state).

Will my engineering board accept PDH credits awarded by PDH-Pro.com?

All of the courses provided by PDH-Pro.com comply with the guidelines set forth by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES). As such, courses provided by PDH-Pro.com are accepted by all state boards that require Continuing Professional Competency Activities to maintain engineering licensure. However, PDH-Pro.com is not an approved sponsor of Continuing Professional Competency Activities in the states that pre-approve sponsors – Florida, North Carolina, Louisiana, and New York.

In all the other U.S. states that mandate Continuing Professional Competency Activities to maintain licensure, it is the individual engineer’s responsibility to ensure that activities meet the board’s guidelines.

Are PDHPr0.com course credits guaranteed to be accepted by my board?

PDH-Pro.com guarantees that every course we offer will be accepted by your board when the course content is relevant to your professional development such that it will “maintain, improve or expand the skill and knowledge of the licensee’s field of practice”. It is ultimately your responsibility to review the content of a course to determine whether it meets this requirement. Nevertheless, PDH-Pro.com will provide a full refund of your money in the event that any course we offer is not accepted by your licensing board for any reason.

How many online continuing education credits can I take each renewal period?

To find out about the limit of online credits (or any other specific information about your continuing education competency program), click on your state of licensure under state requirements.

What are the criteria for PDH-Pro.com courses to be accepted by my State Licensing Board?

If you are a registered Professional Engineer in states that do not pre-approve continuing education sponsors or courses, then it is ultimately your responsibility to ensure that the course you wish to take is in compliance with the requirements of your State Licensing Board.

Generally, the State Licensing Boards for these states will accept online continuing education courses provided that:

“A course or activity whose purpose and objective are clear with a content that will maintain, improve or expand the skills and knowledge of the licensee’s field of practice” as recommended in the NCEES CPC Guidelines.

The completion of the course can be independently verified by taking a quiz and grading it with the results being maintained by the course provider for a specific period of time.

Since PDH-Pro.com courses are prepared in compliance with all state board requirements and in accordance with the NCEES CPC Guidelines, they are considered to be accepted courses by all other State Licensing Boards. Our courses are also supplemented with a professional quiz process intended to evaluate the engineer’s effort to strengthen and maintain competency in the technical, managerial, or ethical fields.

What is a CEU?

CEU stands for Continuing Education Unit which is a conventional form of measure for continuing educational programs.

What is a PDH?

PDH stands for Professional Development Hour and is defined as one contact hour (minimum of 50 minutes) of instruction, presentation or study.

What is the relationship between a CEU and a PDH?

1 CEU = 10 PDHs

How do I know if my State Licensing Board mandates continuing education requirements?
